Location

Agia Roumeli is the small coastal village in southwest Crete, that you reach after walking through the Samaria Gorge. The magnificent scene and the fabulous beach with its deep blue sea, provides to the visitors of the gorge relaxation and extremelly peaceful moments to those, who will select Agia Roumeli for their holidays.

Agia Roumeli was destroyed by the Turks in 1867 after the battle of Aradena. However, the Turkish did not manage to penetrate the defence of the canyon where all the women and children were protected. The same had happened in 1866.

The ancient Greek site of Tara, is on the left (east) hill as you exit the gorge. The hill comes in view of the Libyan Sea.

The village is not connected to the road network. You can only reach it by boat from Sfakia, Paleohora and Sougia. So, all people, who desire to visit and enjoy its unique peace, can come from those areas, by boats servicing the line, or with their own. Of course, nature's adorers reaching Omalos can cross Samaria gorge and come to Agia Roumeli. In Sfakia, Sougia, Paleohora and Omalo the visitor can easily come through a good road network, that the island has.
